Elks Scholarship Programs

The Elks National Foundation provides more than $3.64 million in college scholarships each year through its three scholarship programs.

1.      Most Valuable Student Scholarships 500 four-year scholarships, ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year, for graduating high school seniors based on financial need, leadership and scholarship.

2.      Legacy Awards $4,000 ($1,000 year for four years) merit-based scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elks who are members in good standing.

3.      Emergency Educational Grants One-year educational grants available to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks.

The application process and deadlines vary for each program.  All applications must go through our Lodge before reaching the ENF office.  For details on these programs, please  go to www.elks.org and click on the appropriate scholarship or grant tab.  This year’s deadline is 2 Dec 2011 for MVS scholarships.

Our lodge is a very active participant in these programs through our scholarship committee.  In addition to the ENF scholarships, our lodge awards scholarships which are funded through our Bingo efforts.  The number and size of the scholarships vary from year to year.  This last year, for example, we gave out 7 $1,000 scholarships, one of them being the Prenzel Scholarship that was set up by the daughter of PER John Prenzel and his wife Evelyn who was very active in our Auxiliary.   If you are looking for a committee to join, this is it.

YOUTH CAMP

Camping season is almost here.  Our recruiting is going well and we hope to have our full quota of both boys and girls.  Volunteers are working with schools and recruiting campers.

Camper physicals are tentatively scheduled to be held at the Lodge on Monday, June 20 at 7:30.  We still only have one physician and are desperately seeking one more to help ease the load.  A second physician could choose a different day and time if they preferred.

As of this writing we still need some people to chaperone the campers to and from camp.  We need one or two more people to ride down with the girls on July 3 (we have one person).   Then we need two people to take the boys down on July 24 and two more to go down and pick them up on July 30.   This is a great way to get to see the camp and hear about their experiences first hand!  Please contact me at bmarshall12@verizon.net  or 703-255-6274 to volunteer.  Let’s work together to make this Arlington-Fairfax’s best camping season yet!  Thanks to everyone for their continued support of camp, our Major State project.

Congratulations to Georgiana Knotts for being named the 4th Vice President from the North District of the Youth Camp program.

2188 Has A Record Camping Season

Once again this year I want to thank you as a Lodge for your support of the Virginia Elks Youth Camp, our Major State Project, by helping to send deserving youth to camp.  We sent 42 campers, which is 8 over our quota. Only the Charlottesville Lodge sent more.  It is heartwarming to hear the stories these campers tell when they return home.  Many are from very difficult family situations and a week away is a welcome relief.

I’d like to thank those who chaperoned the bus trips: Lisa and Michael Stevens, Brenda Slingerland, and Georgianna and Tim Knotts.  We also had members of the Alexandria Lodge help out with chaperoning.  A special thank you to Joan Gavin for her help with the girls when I was in Phoenix.

This is our State Project and our Lodge is one of the major supporters in the state.  I want to thank Tom, Jay and the club staff for arranging the departure setups for the campers and their families and lunches for the campers and chaperones.

Thank you again for your help and support.

This program  provides for interest free  loans of a maximum of $1000.00 to children and grand children of Lodge members. Loans are to be repaid within four years following graduation or termination of schooling. Tim Knotts administers the program. Inquire of Tim for further details and application for the loan.
